OUR STORY

Owner and Head Pastry Chef Starlett Simmons always dreamed of baking. She got her start at a young age and as she grew older, took every opportunity to bake cakes, cookies, and special occasion desserts for friends, family, and coworkers

When her career as an accountant started to take a toll with long hours and time away from her family. Starlett decided to take a leap of faith and end her successful career to enroll in culinary school where she mastered the chemistry of baking and the art of pastry.

In just a few short years, Five Star Cake Co. has gone from hobby to home-based business, to a brick and mortar storefront in Roseville. Starlett and her team bring you the homemade, homey experience of grandma’s kitchen with an elegant flair.

And just like in grandma’s kitchen, everything at Five Star Cake Co. is made from scratch with the highest quality, locally-sourced ingredients. The bakery also features a variety of Michigan-made products. Five Star Cake Co. prides ourselves in baking in small batches and staying open until ALL products are sold out, making us a sustainable bakery!

Best of all, Starlett has been able to train and mentor her daughter Kai, who also fell in love with baking while working side-by-side with her mom. Kai graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY in August 2022 with a Bachelor’s degree in Pastry Arts and Business Management. Kai is currently a Pastry chef at the bakery and is famous for her delicious cinnamon buns.

Starlett has been featured on Fox2 Detroit’s “Cooking School,” Rushton’s Baker Spotlight, The Steve Harvey Show, We LUV Detroit, The State of MI Detroit Entrepreneurs Spotlight, Edible WOW Magazine, and a host of other appearances and publications. Her confections have been sold at special events around the metro area including Taste of The Lions, Detroit’s Eastern Market, Northwest Detroit Farmers Market, and various other pop up events in the Metropolitan area.
